Flattening Mill: How Does It Work?

How Are Flattening Mills Mechanically Constructed?

1. Two-high rolling mill: simple structure and wide range of uses. It is divided into reversible and irreversible. The former include blooming mill, rail beam rolling mill, plate rolling mill, etc. Irreversible types include billet continuous rolling mills, stacked thin plate rolling mills, thin plate or strip cold rolling mills, skin pass mills, etc. The two-high rolling mill in the early 1980s had a roll diameter of 0 mm, a roll length of 3500 mm, and a rolling speed of 3 to 7 m/s.

2. Three-roll mill: The rolled piece is rolled alternately from the upper and lower roll gaps to the left or right. It is generally used as a section steel rolling mill and a rail beam rolling mill. This mill has been replaced by the two-high mill.

3. Lauter three-roll mill: the upper and lower rollers are driven, the middle roller is floating, and the workpiece passes alternately above or below the middle roller. Because the diameter of the middle roller is small, the rolling force can be reduced. It is often used for rolling rail beams, section steel, medium and thick plates, and can also be used for blanking small steel ingots. This kind of rolling mill was gradually replaced by the four-high rolling mill.

4. Four-high rolling mill: The work roll has a smaller diameter and transmits the rolling torque, and the rolling pressure is borne by the backup roll with a larger diameter. The advantages of this kind of rolling mill are high relative rigidity, large reduction, small rolling force, and can roll thinner plates. There are two types of reversible and continuous rolling, which are widely used as medium and heavy plate rolling mills, wire and strip hot or cold rolling mills, and skin pass mills.
